Allow those with federal student loan debt to opt out of Social Security and pay the tax towards their student loan debt

Created by J.O. on January 16, 2013

It is not uncommon for someone coming out of college to incurr $100,000 in student loan debt, or higher. Student loan debt is crippling younger individuals' ability to insert money into the market place and stimulate the economy. It is the younger generation, after all, that are looking to purchase their first house, first car, etc. On top of student loan payments (which go to the government), most young people pay roughly 45% in taxes across the board, 6.2% of which goes to social security. Allow people to opt out of social security and use that 6.2% tax towards paying down federal student loan debt, that way they can invest in something real and tangible, as opposed to a program that they will never reap the benefits of. If the gov wants to later put that money towards SSI so be it
