68 million Americans lack a traditional checking or savings account, mainly because they live in an area that is underserved by commercial banks. This results in families utilizing other, more expensive resources for financial services such as payday lenders and check cashing stores. This costs each family an average of $2,412. per year in extra interest and fees. That is $2412. that these families could have used to buy food, pay bills, or even avoid bankruptcy.
