Allow the use of religious sacraments (e.g. peyote, ayahuasca) in alignment with the First Amendment freedom of religion

Created by R.I. on December 27, 2013

There are plants on this planet which have been used for thousands of years as religious sacraments. Peyote, ayahuasca, and various species of mushroom are important parts of ancient spiritual practices which have been repressed by the United States government.

The government allows the Native American Church and Santo Daime to use peyote and ayahuasca respectively. It is their right as humans, but when will that right be extended those non-members who nevertheless believe in the same sacred wisdom those plants provide?

The current prohibitions are akin to a ban on the Bible or Quran, but are quite literally a ban on prayer itself. We urge the Obama administration to acknowledge our First Amendment right to religious practice without fear of persecution.
