I would like to petition on behalf of military members and veterans that we require banks to relax lending rules for VA loan applicants.
In the current economic climate, banks are eschewing the lack of credit requirement for a VA loan in favor of demanding a score of 620 or higher, and often asking for $5000 (or more) to be in savings. Enlisted servicemembers often find it impossible to make savings due to the low pay and constant relocations; subsequently, veterans often spend months unemployed.
The VA loan was created to help mitigate these natural conflicts for military personnel, but is no longer handled by the VA -- instead left to the hands of private banks who do not want the supposed risk of providing a mortgage for a person who risked his/her life for America.
