Allow women to be in control of their own maiden names after a divorce

Created by T.R. on March 07, 2013

Currently upon filing for and being granted a divorce, there exists an antiquated and outdated practice which requires that the woman to ask for and thusly be granted permission by her (ex/former) husband to receive her maiden name back once the divorce is finalized and is allowed to use it again as her own. This request can be denied during the proceedings, thereby forcing the woman to continue using her married name regardless of her marital status after the divorce. This petition requests that this outdated policy be taken off of any and all law books in the country in all states and allow women to have the freedom to use their maiden name, their original given name as they see fit. They should not be required to seek permission from anyone as if they are an 'owner' of their person.
