The USA is one of the only developed countries in the world that does not allow parents to have an extended period of time off with their children after birth. FMLA is a start, but a huge portion of the workforce does not fall under FMLA. At least one parent should be covered, and paid a portion of their earnings, for the first year after their child is born. The benefits of staying home with baby, especially during the first year, are astounding. This would also provide mothers a more comfortable environment if they choose to breastfeed their children. If a person cannot find a job or loses their job due to unforeseen circumstances or illness, they can be covered under unemployment or disability. Why not cover parents who will return to the workforce in one year?
