Antibiotic resistant infections are a tremendous problem facing the healthcare system. Tens of thousands of cases are diagnosed each year, many resulting in fatality.
There is currently a treatment available in Russia, Georgia, and Austria called phage therapy, which uses bacteriophages that can be targeted at a specific bacteria. They are very safe and potentially less harmful than antibiotics, which carry risk of opportunistic infections.
Currently, the treatment is not being developed in the US, mostly due to regulatory problems. Bacteriophages are live organisms, which present patent problems for private companies. They also work best as drug cocktails, which the FDA frowns upon.
I encourage Pres. Obama and Congress to alter the regulatory law to promote this promising technolgy
