The Electoral College stunts the ability of Americans to truly voice their opinions in the political process. Originally this was created as a method of helping to balance power and then later justified to serve as a protection against possible outcomes of the popular vote. However this is an obsolete institution. The population has higher literacy rates and higher access to information than at any other point in history. Their votes ought to be able to directly influence who is elected.
