With the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court, Congress lost the power to regulate financial donations to political campaigns by foreign and domestic companies. As a result, an unknown amount of foreign money is being spent to influence our elections at the city, state and federal level. The Supreme Court ruled that a corporation was a 'person' for the purposes of free speech.
There have been a number of proposals to amend the constitution to limit the damage done by that ruling, but they all focus on the financial issues. We need a broader amendment. The wording should be:
"Any reference to a person or persons in the Constitution will be interpreted to mean only individual human beings, and not corporations, fictitious persons, or any similar legal construct."
