The current system of "representative" government is not as democratic as it could be. The US would benefit from a system of direct democracy, similar to the Swiss model, which would give, "We the People", the authority to define and defend our rights.
Direct Democracy is more comprehensive than representative democracy. The chasm between public opinion and government policy is huge (and growing wider). Relying on elected officials to defend our rights is unfair to both us and them. We need to share this responsibility in order that it does not become misrepresentative.
With the advent of the internet we clearly have the tools to give everyone an equal voice where it matters most. To deny this ability is to deny the will of the People in favor of something less.
