Economic well-being means more than a living wage job. Equally important is the confidence that, in periods of unemployment, or retirement, or if oneis or becomes disabled, or if a household breadwinner is lost, there will be assurance of income sufficient to live in dignity and without loss of station. Social Security and its counterpart, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are crucial to insuring that every American is able to be a part of the middle class. Benefit levels should be raised to reflect these values with corresponding higher levels of revenue flowing into the Social Security Trust Fund via removal of the cap on income subject to the Social Security tax, and taxing upper income capital gains and dividend incomes in order to assure long-term security for all.
