The need for the Electoral College (a secret group of some 500 "friends" of Congress who get the right to elect the President) is long since passed. When the Constitution was written, illiteracy and poverty among the voters was high: they could be tricked into voting against their desired candidate (make your "X" here), or had their vote held hostage by an employer or mob boss (my way or the highway). Modern media and current educational levels allow the electorate to know the issues and the candidates, and get the word out if they are being threatened or their right to vote is being denied, so the chances of fraud and undue influence are greatly diminished. The most important office in our government should reflect the people's choice, not the choice of a secret elite.
