The Energy Policy Act of 2005 contains a loophole that exempts oil and gas companies from following requirements in congressional acts (i.e., Safe Drinking Water Act, etc.) passed to protect clean water and air for the public and prevent the release of toxic substances into the environment. This loophole allows wastewater from oil and gas operations to be discharged into surface water in AL, methane gas leaks to uproot families in CA, and earthquakes to devastate OK. Furthermore, oil and gas companies are exempt from disclosing the toxins they use to harvest natural resources, and these toxins negatively affect our nation’s air and water supply. Tell Congress to amend the Energy Policy Act to make oil and gas companies abide by the legal acts passed to keep our nation clean.
