The Fair Housing Act grants Americans certain protections when applying for a lease for an apartment or a mortgage loan on a house. These protections include those for race, color, national origin, religion, gender, familial status, and handicap. There is no federal protection for age.
I believe that all adults should have the same opportunities to rent or buy a home, whether they be 18 or 22. However, in my search, I have found many apartments that I cannot even apply for because I'm not yet 21 or, in some cases, 24. I don't believe that's right.
I'm asking for an amendment to include age as one of the protected statuses. As long as the person applying is a legally defined adult and can prove themselves as such, he or she shouldn't be denied based on age.
