It is well known that Christopher Columbus never set foot in North America. He landed in the Caribbean and explored the Central and South American Coasts. While there, he and his men forced the native peoples they found into slavery and allegedly imposed barbaric forms of punishment, including torture. The arrival of Columbus and his men brought the arrival of diseases, decimating local populations, and is responsible for the rape and murder of indigenous people. Columbus should no longer serve as a celebrated symbol of our country. To honor those that he desecrated, we the people request Columbus Day be renamed Indigenous People's Day and be a federally recognized holiday.
