Ryan Holle, a man with no prior criminal record, was convicted of pre-meditated murder in the United States in 2004. For lending his car to his roommate.
He is now serving his 11th year of a life sentence with no chance of parole due to the Felony Murder Rule, which states that anyone directly or indirectly involved in a murder can also be charged with murder.
Ryan's roommate used Ryan's car to attempt to rob the home of a known marijuana seller. During the attempted robbery, the woman's 14 year-old daughter was killed. Ryan's roommate and the mother recieved appropriately hard sentences but so did Ryan, who was asleep in his bed at the time.
It is time we do away with this outdated and ineffective law.
