The White House continues to work hard to protect student loan borrowers by creating more manageable ways to repay our debt. Those of us who've pursued higher education, including graduate level education, are eternally grateful for this work.
However, in creating the Revised Pay as You Earn (REPAYE) program, I believe there was a misstep in requiring that a spouse's income be considered in repayment rates. This requirement does not exist in Pay As You Earn, Income-Based Repayment, and Income-Contingent Repayment plans, so I don't believe it should be required in the REPAYE plan either.
The impact of such a restriction is that couples have to decide between getting married, and using the most cost effective means of paying back student loans.
