Change the National Minimum Drinking Age Act to set the national minimum drinking age at 18. We call for these changes for the following reason:
1. The drinking age was originally raised to 21 in 1984 order to combat drunk driving. However, anti-drunk driving campaigns have increased tremendously since then, and the penalties for driving drunk have also increased. Therefore, we do not believe that lowering the drinking age would significantly increase incidences of drunk driving.
2. Other countries, such as Canada, have set their drinking age at 18 and have not seen significantly higher instances of drunk driving and alcohol abuse.
3. 18-year-olds can die for their country, but they cannot drink. This is morally wrong.
4. The act as it exists has proven to be largely unenforceable.
