The US Social Security Program is the most expensive government program in the world. It is also the most expensive program by far in our federal budget. Most of the reason for this is because it is not up to today's standards. When the social security program was created, the normal retirement age was 65 - in 1960 it was 67 - today, with scientific breakthroughs, population issues, and inflation, people are not retiring at the age set to start receiving benefits. This is ballooning the Social Security Program and the nations debt to absurd numbers. The problem is two-fold - as baby boomers hit their mid-sixties and start living longer and longer, the population of people older than 65 will be exponentially larger than ever before. We need a change NOW before this gets out of hand.
