Unless medically discharged, all payments for separation are recouped before the veteran sees any sort of compensation for their disabilities (if any), this can take years depending on the amount paid at separation and what the individual veteran's rating is. In the wake of severe personnel cuts across the branches, there are many veterans trying to survive on their separation benefits, and many are struggling to find employment that fits their specific skill set in a workforce dominated by the "degree is better than experience" mindset. Many veterans were involuntarily separated, and most of them were unprepared for this, leaning hard on that separation pay to get them through. This amendment would ease the transition into civilian life and take care of those that struggle to adjust.
