We must fund a nationwide review of police academies, recruitment efforts, hiring procedures, and so on to recruit more black cops.
We need a national outreach to black communities that encourages conversation within about perceptions of being a cop that may impact recruitment.
We must address deficiencies in recruitment. And, equally as important, we need to encourage opportunities for more black cops to be assigned to predominantly black communities (like Ferguson) where we often see police forces that are predominantly white.
Black Americans need to see that they are stakeholders in this nation, too, not its inmates. They need to see their own image behind the badge more often if lasting trust is ever to be successfully nurtured.
This is a homeland security and moral issue.
