Since 1983 the president of United States has annually awarded teachers in the field of mathematics and science. We are asking for recognition in excellence for social studies from the president; an award from the leader of the free world for the educators who focus on civics, history, geography, and economics. President Barack Obama, a former teacher of social studies (Constitutional Law), should acknowledge excellence within the very field he used to teach. All content areas, including social studies, should have national recognition as they educate the future of America.
This petition is twofold as we not only want to institute this award for excellence in social studies, but to also nominate Ralph Eugene Popham of Watson Junior High School (Widefield School District 3) for the honor.
