The US has made a significant contribution towards building and supporting the Thai military over the years. The Thai military is now using this military might to crush human rights, freedom of speech, detain peaceful protestors indefinitely without trial, and detain and silence anyone who criticises the military coup, including academics and journalists. The democratically elected government has been removed and leading politicians detained indefinitely in secret locations. It is important the United States uses all possible means to ensure Thailand returns to a democratic path, where human rights and liberty for all are respected and protected. It is only through US sanctions targeted at the perpetrators of this coup that they will listen.
