The recent trajedy in Newtown CT, highlights two major faults in the American system: the availability of firearms, and mental illness. A tax on firearms, ammunition, and firearm accessories would reduce their availabity without banning anything. This would be in accordance to our second ammendment right, and is within the powers of congress to create taxes. The money created by this tax would be used to improve mental healthcare which is sorely in need in this country. While this is not a perfect solution, it combined with other reforms would greatly reduce both pieces of the kind of equations that lead to situations like Newtown, CT. A system like this can be modeled on the cigarette taxes that pay for cancer treatments.
