Because an informed electorate is necessary to the success of a democratic republic, all statements of facts in political advertisements must be verifiably true, just as statements in commercial advertisements are required to be true. Thus, truth in advertising laws must be applied to political advertisements. Penalties for violation must be sufficiently severe to discourage violation.
