We petition the Administration to appoint a biopreparedness czar responsible for addressing the following issues:
1. Mismanagement of funds for Project Bioshield,
2. Poor tracking of BSL-3 and BSL-4 labs in the U.S,
3. A lack of federal accountability for said labs' security policies and procedures, and
4. Improving the overall efficiency, organization, and safety of U.S. biodefense programs.
As biological threats become increasingly prominent, either due to natural disease or bioterror activity, the Administration must ensure that the U.S.'s biodefense programs are operating in a safe, productive, responsible, and well-coordinated manner.
