We respectfully request that President Obama make a recess appointment of Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
For the last six years, this bureau has lacked a permanent leader which has impacted the ability of the ATF to enforce firearms laws that are in place, computerize databases of gun owners, and stand up to the powerful NRA lobby in Washington.
This appointment has been hamstrung by a Senate that is unwilling to act, and it is unconscionable in the wake of the seven mass killings that have occurred in 2012 alone. President Obama can effect this change during the upcoming Congressional recess, and we urge him to do so.
