The United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky was created over 100 years ago. Remarkably, no female has ever been appointed to serve as a judge in this judicial district. (**Note: At one time there was a female judge who was appointed to "straddle" the Eastern and Western Districts, but lived and worked almost exclusively in the Eastern District.**)
Currently, there are two vacancies in the Western District of Kentucky. There are no females currently serving as Article III Judges or Magistrate Judges. Given the number of female lawyers, this is astounding.
President Obama should take the opportunity to make a historic appointment and help remedy the clear gender imbalance. If not, a male-dominated bench will persevere for yet another generation.
