During the course of the 2012 campaign, the President and others repeatedly explained that the Great Recession is an unprecedented period of economic difficulty that requires unity and coordinated action. In order to heal the wounds of a close and hard-fought election, the President should nominate former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to lead the Department of Commerce.
Romney's background and strong ties to the business community qualify him to serve during these trying times. Additionally, Romney possesses the ability to work with business leaders and GOP elected officials in a way that few others could. In addition to these practical considerations, appointing Romney would send a strong message that there really is no red America or blue America, only a United States of America.
