Judge Richard Posner is the most cited and universally respected judge in the country. He is a Republican and 77 years old so many would consider him too old or the wrong party, but he is active, healthy, brilliant and non partisan -- so impossible for all but the most doctrinaire ideologues to oppose. His appointment would be based on merit, not politics and could be the start of moving the Supreme Court confirmations away from partisan litmus tests and back to the founder's intent of selecting the best person for the position.
