The National Endowment for the Arts supports the soul of this country by supporting those who give it expression through theatre, music, literature, visual arts, dancing and so forth. To have allowed it to drift without a chairman for more than a year sends a bad signal about the importance of this work to the country. Now that the filibuster threat is gone, give us a new head of the NEA. And increase the appropriation while you're at it! To quote an arts advocacy group, "Nationally, the industry generated $135.2 billion of economic activity—$61.1 billion by the nation's nonprofit arts and culture organizations in addition to $74.1 billion in event-related expenditures by their audiences. This economic activity supports 4.13 million full-time jobs." Attention must be paid. Please.
