Appoint a Secretary of Education who has both actual K-12 teaching experience and an advanced degree in education.

Created by S.A. on November 16, 2011

The person making the decisions that affect America's children every day for thirteen years of their lives should be someone with the experience and expertise to do so. Political and business experience alone does not prepare one to make developmentally appropriate and pedagogically sound decisions. The Department of Education should be led by someone who understands the challenges of teaching in the modern classroom, not because that person has advisers but because that person has experienced it first hand. Moreover, the Secretary of Education should be intimately familiar with cutting edge educational research, the kind of expertise that comes doing that research, not simply picking a few articles that match the latest political agenda.
