Approve Newborn Screening for ALD (Adrenoleukodystrophy) for all babies born in the U.S.

ALD is an X-linked genetic disorder that affects approximately 15,000-17,000 people worldwide. The most severe form of the disease affects boys in childhood between the ages of 4 and 11. Many boys do not survive because the disease has progressed too far for treatment by the time they are accurately diagnosed. ADD/ADHD (attention deficit disorder) is the primary misdiagnosis in childhood while MS (multiple sclerosis) is the most common in adults .
Diagnosing babies with this disorder at birth would allow families to monitor the newborns for signs of the early onset enabling them to receive treatment in a timely manner while also identify other family members at risk of developing the adult onset.
