As the largest single dish telescope in the world, the Arecibo Observatory provides an opportunity for our island in science education and research in Puerto Rico. The NSF recently cut funding for the observatory by $4 million. The site is constantly threatened with more budget cuts, the next possibly coming within 2 weeks. Historically, most Puerto Ricans at the observatory have been maintenance, security or visitor’s center staff. In the telescope's history there has never been a greater volume of Puerto Ricans using the telescope for science than there are now. Funding the observatory will continue to increase scientific interest and education among Puerto Ricans, aid in community morale, and grow a local scientific community with access to a unique world class installation.
