Recently, Walter James Palmer, DDS of Minnesota traveled to Zimbabwe to hunt big game. His chosen target was Cecil the Lion, a well known lion who was also a participant in a long range study. Walter and his compatriots illegally lured Cecil out of his habitat, where he was afforded protection, in order to kill him in an area he was not protected. In a further attempt to hide his actions, the collar Cecil wore to track his movements was partially destroyed.
With Cecil's death, his descendants will also die as a new alpha male will assume his place within the pride. Walter's actions will have dire consequences for future lion generations and conservation efforts.
His arrest and extradition to Zimbabwe to face prosecution will stand as a warning to all humans who illegally poach.
