Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has been charged with genocide in the Darfur region, killing over 200,000 of his own people. He has avoided arrest for these crimes by restricting travel to Africa and Arab nations, but is now planning a trip to New York to attend this week's U.N. General Assembly. We must act swiftly to arrest him as soon as he sets foot on American soil, and put him on a plane to the International Criminal Court in the Hague to face charges for crimes against humanity. Although we are not obligated by law to do so, there is precedent. Congolese warlord Bosco Ntaganda turned himself in to the U.S. Embassy in the Rwandan capital of Kigali in March, and was transferred voluntarily by the US to the ICC. We must act now to bring this war criminal to justice.
