Parents who have taken out PLUS loans for their children's college educations are currently only allowed to deduct $2500.00 on their annual tax returns. Many parents pay much more than this each year, particularly if they have multiple children who attend a college or a post secondary institution. Parents who cannot afford to pay college expenses outright or who do not qualify for grant monies are already burdened with the remaining high cost of tuition, room and board that is not covered by the amounts that the student is permitted to borrow. The cap of $2500 puts an unfair burden on working parents who are trying to both help their child/ren pay for college while trying at the same time to save for their own retirement.
