Firearms related injury and death are a serious public health problem in the USA. With the exception of Mexico, the US has the highest rate of firearms related deaths of all OECD member countries. According to FBI data, approximately 70% of all murders in the USA each year are committed with firearms, which is more murders than from all other means--knives, bats, hands, feet, etc--combined. The gun lobby has been very deliberate and successful in stopping federal funding for firearms related violence. Not surprisingly, any time new laws are proposed to reduce gun violence, the gun lobby complains that there is not enough research available to justify any new laws. Please ask congress to fund data collection for all gun violence, injury and related crimes in all 50 states by the CDC.
