Inmates who max out their prison term do not receive appropriate assistance to help them reintegrate into society. In 2012, the max out rate of prisoners was 1 in 5. The period that follows their release is essential in avoiding recidivism. Ex-offenders returning to prison would cost taxpayers more money than it would to help them once they’ve been released. Some of these inmates have been in prison since they were just teenagers and need help transitioning back into their community. The assistance of a social worker can ensure ex-offenders are provided with safe housing, job training, and support groups. We petition the Obama administration to provide these inmates with access to a social worker who can provide them with the necessary resources to succeed.
