The refugee crisis in the Netherlands has led to the rise of far-right populism and wanton hatred against immigrants. Police officers routinely establish checkpoints outside of supermarkets. Immigrants are asked where they were born, not of which country they are a citizen, and thereby treated accordingly. This has led to US nationals born outside of the United States to receive very different treatment from US citizens born in the United States. There is also fear that Dutch law is being used to justify ethnic cleansing in the Dominican Republic.
