Currently there are six companies that own 90% of what we read, watch or listen to. Since 1983 the number of companies controlling that 90% has gone from 50 down to 6 as a result of deregulation and mergers. The "big six"--GE, News-Corp, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner and CBS--own magazines, newspapers, radio and television stations, entertainment companies and online access companies.
Because of the monopoly they hold, these companies can effectively decide what information we have ready access to and limit the flow of information that may negatively affect their corporate interests.
These corporations need to be broken up into smaller entities to allow competition and the free flow of information.
