The United States should propose that NATO allies collectively buy the Mistrals and make them a common asset dedicated to the NATO Response Force.
There has been a lot of talking and criticizing about France's attitude towards Putin because of those war ships. As long as no proper offer to buy the Mistrals will have been done by NATO or another country/organisation, François Hollande will be able to hide behind the argument that it will be costly for France to cancel the deal.
Buying the Mistrals would have powerful, positive effects on NATO:
- Prevent the ships from falling into the hands of Russia
- Demonstrate solidarity among allies.
- Build cooperation on Smart Defense projects
NATO, make an offer that France can't refuse!
