We the people ask the federal government to Call on Congress to act on an issue:

Ask that Obama or Congress propose legislation to change Columbus Day to Meucci Day.

Created by R.M. on October 10, 2016

There is no doubt that Christopher Columbus was a tremendously ambitious and daring risk taker. However, thousands of native people of the Carribean died and suffered directly because of what he and his men did. One’s name and accomplishments can not be held separately from each other when we celebrate one’s name, because in celebrating a name we celebrate all aspects of the life of the person who bears the name.

This petition is for the removal of Columbus Day as a holiday, and putting in its place a very worthy Italian American, Antonio Meucci. Meucci is credited in the United States Congress Resolution 269 for his vast work in audio technology and notably for his contribution to the invention of the telephone, arguably, one of the most transformative inventions in history.
