Currently, there are no military occupational standard (MOS) for counselors in the military, however, there are established MOS's for social workers and psychologists. Both Veterans Affairs and The Department of Defense now take LPC's as civilian practitioners and my hope is to get the active duty branches of the military to do the same. The American Counseling Association is working to get the office of personnel management (OPM) to establish occupational standards for LPC's but that counselors can help by writing their state representatives and asking them to 1. ask for OPM to establish an occupational standard for professional mental health counselors, 2. ask the Army/Air Force to take the necessary steps towards commissioning counselors.
