Politics has become an unending parade of special interests, huge corporate campaign contributions, expensive dinners and fancy golf trips. Rich men, and sometimes women, become Senators as career decisions. 'Government for the people' has become a joke when a politician's biggest concerns are how their time in office will benefit their lives afterwards.
This should end. Asking politicians to be deliberately modest, give up their ostentatious and richly benefit-laden free rides, asking them to live like most of their nation lives, might help mitigate the effect of lobbying. It might also help politicians understand how important education, social safety nets, and regulation of food and medicine are when you aren't living on a free ride and family money.
