Almost three million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Pet overpopulation not only results in a tragic waste of animal lives but poses an expensive threat to public health through spread of diseases, traffic accidents, neighbor disputes, increased animal abuse, resulting in waste of public and private funds and aggravating mental health issues, including animal hoarding. Many individuals use their last dollars to try to solve this problem on their own.
A Call to Action by the Surgeon General is a science-based document to stimulate action nationwide to solve a major public health problem, therefore proven scientific solutions such as spay/neuter and access to free and low cost rabies and other veterinary care should be endorsed and publicized by SG
