When a woman becomes pregnant, her body goes through many changes! After 9 months of pregnancy and a difficult labor (natural or cesarean) a woman is then left to care for a new born child, which can consists of lifting, carrying, pushing the child in a car seat and stroller. This takes muscle strength and proper body mechanics to avoid injury.
Postpartum women should receive at least 6 sessions of Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy to address some of these issues and establish an appropriate home exercise program designed to rebuild the core region in an effort to prevent lumbar or other injuries due to over-stretched muscles and go over proper body mechanics when it comes to carrying or lifting the new born in its car seat or other related functional tasks.
