The President has on many occasions called for both parties in Congess to cease being polarized and compromise on major issues to progress the nation instead of sitting in deadlock. It is well known that Mr. Obama and Mr. Scalia differ in their opinions about national issues. It would be a gesture of good will and a prime example of collaboration for Mr. Obama to recognize the dignity of Mr. Scalia and his contribution to the public discourse by attending Mr. Scalia's funeral. Mr. Obama's planned absence is a missed opportunity to drive home his desire for interparty cooperation.
