Understanding emotions are running high after the tragedy at Newton elementary it is irresponsible to violate the 2nd amendment by putting a ban on guns. "Assault weapons" is a term coined by the media to stir emotion and cloud the issue. Our founding fathers put the 2nd Amendment into the Bill of Rights to ensure the Citizens had a means of defending themselves against a tyrannical government.
Fully automatic weapons are not needed for defense, but there is a definite need for tactically designed semi-automatic weapons to ensure the government remembers it is an institution given authority by the people, not a body designed to rule over the people. Consider other options for safety such as promoting concealed carry by law abiding citizens, redesign school entrances, and require gun locks
