Clair Cameron Patterson was a scientist who first accurately measured the age of the Earth. He spent the latter part of his career advocating against the use of lead (a known neurotoxin) in consumer and commercial products in the face of great resistance by the lead industry. As a result of his effort, legislation was passed banning use of lead, and the ambient level has dropped significantly. The amount of lead in children has dropped over 80% compared to what it was during the 60s and 70s. Dr. Patterson didn't receive much in terms of recognition for his work, but he should be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his tireless campaign on behalf of the public interest. It is a credit to his effort that many other countries have passed legislation banning lead use.
